Our 2nd conference was generously funded by BBC Children in Need.

This year’s theme was chILD and genetics. Between 27th and 30th July 2012 this conference was an even greater success than our previous year’s event. Held at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa, South Wirral, this venue gave us and the children freedom coupled with exceptional hospitality and service.

27th July – Greetings and Dinner

After everyone checked into their rooms and familiarised themselves with the grounds we all dined a luxury 3 course dinner followed by football and games on the hotels grounds.

28th July – Conference

The medical advice came from professionals who very kindly participated in the following sessions:

Dr Lynn Greenhalgh, Consultant Geneticist, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

This was an interesting and thought provoking talk on genetics and how it fits in with chILD. Lynn was exceptional at taking this complex topic and breaking it down into simple terms for those new to the subject.

Dr Quen Mok, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist, Great Ormond Street Hospital

This fascinating talk saw Quen take genetics one step further. All received a history of chILD in the UK, facts and figures on surfactant disorders and methods of testing.

Professor Andrew Bush, Imperial College & Royal Brompton Hospital

This session focused purely on chILD. A lot of the main chILD conditions were discussed and current treatments and also information about the future of chILD. It was an exceptional talk which shall be remembered for many years to come.

Professor Andrew Bush, Imperial College & Royal Brompton Hospital

Asking a medical professional to double check or requesting a second opinion on behalf of a child can be intimidating. Professor Bush discussed ‘Ground Rules’ in the hope to improve relationships with medical professionals if this moment appears. With this motivational talk the parent should have the confidence to deal with it practically and without fear as really, everyone has the same goal – to get your child better.

Claire Bowe, Specialist Oxygen & Vaccinations Nurse, was very kindly on hand aside from the talks for new parents to discuss and provide information on vaccinations.
Rona Young (Dietitian) was kindly available to speak to any chILD families about nutrition and feeding.

Many thanks to our guest speakers for their time and support!

During the conference, the children were minded by The Mobile Creche Company. We thank the team for a wonderful service and keeping the children safe and occupied. After the conference all families met for a large barbeque, more sports and more bonding.

29th July – ChILD Trip to Chester Zoo & Party

Chester Zoo did not know what hit them when a double decker bus of chILD families arrived for the day. It was a fun day for all with plenty of Sunshine. After the Zoo was our chILD party and disco with special guests. Mickey and Minnie Mouse came for a dance, Twisted Fairby balloon modeller created the most amazing balloons which had the children excited and also “Magic Mike” Jones, magician and mind reader astounded both adults and children. Music was provided by DJ Cliff Wheeler.

Thanks so very much to all who helped organise such a memorable and fun weekend. Our 2nd retreat/conference was a great success and we would like to thank all of the families for attending and for the time of our guest speakers. We wish to thank our sponsor BBC Children in Need for without them, the event would not have been possible.
